I have been eagerly looking forward to the time that I could write this letter to you, a time when you would no longer be a child, but looking forward to discovering and learning more about where the Lord is taking you in your life. It has been wonderful talking with you about the things of the Spirit. Each time that we do, I always come away from those conversations amazed that the Lord has created such an intelligent, inquisitive, caring and loving believer.
I love all our conversations and look forward to many more, but I thought it would be helpful for you to have something that you could take your time and read, and not be limited to only having conversations We love you very much. It seems like this is our favorite topic of conversation, now, how you are growing, and how bright and intelligent you are. It seems as though the Lord has given your mother and me this incredible gift.
There are some very wonderful things that have happened in my life. I have had wonderful friends, and incredible adventures around the world. I have seen and done a lot that others have not been able to do. The most wonderful and awesome gift has been the Lord helping me find you.
It was like all the promises of God being fulfilled in this miracle that love produces.
I know you like mysteries. It is almost impossible to describe the life you have without being amazed at the wonderful mystery hidden and kept secret for so long that everyone tries to understand and figure out. “What’s going on here?” People always say, “What is this?” not quite being able to grasp the mystery of our lives. You are part of that great wonderful mystery which has been hidden for so long. So the Lord has led me to write down some of the incredible things that have happened in my relationship with God and to share them with you, knowing that he is leading you to seek him out.
It is hard for many people to understand or believe this great mystery of our lives, and they scoff at what we know the Lord has done with us and that he mysteriously has given us great love, joy, and power. We know you are on an incredible, mysterious journey, with incredible clues to get you more curious. The maker of the universe: He is compelling you. That’s what He does All our love

A friend on the board with me at North Shore Christian School was helping me renovate an apartment below where we lived in Lynn, Massachusetts, for an office where I could see clients. He shared with me that he thought he had certain gifts from God and that they were supernaturally given. Something clicked inside me.
I thought at the time that I had a gift also. I explained it to him that God had given me the ability to see conflicts in people. I told him that I sometimes had the sense that I could see and feel the forces struggling inside a person and this was something that I couldn’t understand, but every time I paid attention to that gift it was usually right on with the person I was counseling. This was nothing I could explain, even with all my training, and right then was aware that this was something that God had given me.
It was several weeks later, when we were leaving a carpet store after buying carpet for my new office space, that Doug mentioned something about being born again. He was talking about a relationship with God where you had to be born again. I thought to myself at the time that Doug was whacked out on religion. I had never heard that expression before in all my time at church, either in the Dutch Reformed church as a pre-seminary student at Hope College, or as a postulant for Holy Orders in the Episcopal Church, when I was attending Oneonta State University in New York.
He looked at me and smiled and I can remember giving him an incredulous look at what he had just said. Thank you Lord for Doug and his faithfulness to you.
